Why We Need

Bible-based Youth Ministries in Nepal

“Having been reminded of the sincere faith that is in you; which lived first in your grandmother Lois, and your mother Eunice, and, I am persuaded, in you also,” 1 Tim 1:6.a

“Parents do not tell their adult kids about Jesus. So their children do not come to church, neither do they believe in the Lord,” pastor Atan Chhiring from Lamachaur Church, Pokhara (West Nepal) complained to me about his church situation while I was talking to another pastor on 24th August of 2010. Pastor Atan has a long history of pastoral ministries in Nepal, a proof of this being his gray hair. His complaint is not only a complaint, but a growing bitter reality within the Nepali Church where many people believe in the Lord when their children are grown up. Many are not able to bring their children to church.

“Some of our boys used so many dirty words in inter-church football tournament. What shall we do?” One of my friends said to me on the phone the same evening.

“My 14 year’s boy is causing me problems by watching porn sites on the internet. Who can help me?” A desperate father had asked me with his sad face.

“I prefer to keep watching television than to read the Bible! If I get spare time, I want to spend my time teasing girls,” A 16 year old Christian youth wrote in a paper while I was doing research about teens’ interest in a youth camp.

“I spend most of my free time listening to my favorite songs from Black Sabbath,” One boy shared about his leisure time interest with me last October while I was in west Nepal. Black Sabbath is a satanic band which is reported to have asked people to accept Satan in their concerts.

These examples are from Nepali churches that represent both urban and rural Nepali churches. Nepal is known to be one of the fastest church growing countries in the world. Jesus multiplied His people and we saw this growth. Because of this growth, his name shall be exalted in everything!

But, the bitter reality is that the Nepali church is ignoring a main part of growth. It seems that we are happy to see big ‘hallelujahs’ on Saturday, and after that we forget about our faith and people. Because of freedom, the church is investing its main efforts in increasing their numbers and buildings. Unfortunately, we rarely see investing and building up of people.

The youth of Nepali churches are being misled by so many things. We can see some godly living and examples in some of the Nepali Christian youths, but many have started to be diverted from the Word of God. These examples are live and true. This shows what will happen in the Nepali church after some years. Church is happy to see large numbers, more Christian activities and outward actions. These things, however, if not coming from a faithful and regenerated heart, is only religion which deceives people. Many youths come to Christianity because it is a new life-style. It is viewed as western and as a modern way of life. That is why we do not see as many committed Christians in church and people care less about the Word of God.

We have started to see many divorces in church done openly; abortion is also growing in church. Satan is happy to put these sins in church so he can fulfill his will. The other sad part is this that the Bible is not preached well. Youth are looking for father figures in churches but they rarely find one. If they do not find a father figure in the church like David was seeking while he called Saul ‘My father, my father’, it is very big possibility that they will find other people to be that father figure. It may be non-Christian star or anything else that will fill this need.

Many youths do not see the Bible as an essential foundation for their lives. We see those who are second generation Christians become nominal. They have been fooled into believing they have salvation. Youths are desperately seeking a role model in church. Many are following the temptations of the world without any role model. Some youth have taken a leadership role in their churches without being called and without being prepared.

If someone doesn’t stand in the gap, these things will continue to grow and become an even bigger problem. One day it will spoil Nepali church. I truly believe that the Lord of the universe has an alternative path that is filled with blessing and protection for His people. But our eyes must see that way.

We can engage in or have many different kinds of ministries, but what will happen, if Nepali church goes without the real Bible-teaching? Their faith will be shallow and in the end the church will suffer. What will happen if we do not have godly leaders in church? That is why we need Bible-based youth ministries in Nepal.

God called me to stand in the gap. I know, I cannot do anything myself, but I press on as He gives me courage in my inner heart at least to facilitate some to be saved.

“I have no greater joy than this, to hear about my children walking in truth.” 3 John 4.

I Drank Cola in a Brothel

“You must drink cola in our home,” Gharwali (a lady owner of a brothel) insisted us for that while we were passing one of the Red Light Districts of Mumbai (India) in 11 November 2010.

We saw in her house there were 6 ladies waiting for the customers. I was with James Nepali (a missionary from our church back in Nepal) and Bimala Thapa (director of Asha Nepal). Asha Nepal is working for sexually exploited women and their children (www.ashanepal.org). I am as their board secretary got the chance to visit Mumbai and see these heart-breaking situations of trafficked girls in Mumbai.

She ordered three cup of cola for us. We started to talk. Slowly that Gharwali began her story. She was sold by her own grandfather while she was 12. She refused to sleep with a man but she got a gift of big beating and rape. She did to save her life. After some years, she started own dhanda (business of buying and using girls as sex slave). She also told that after some years of dhanda she wanted to go back village. She went to her village in Baglung of western Nepal for six times but her father rejected her and she had to come back Mumbai with some girls to use for sex slavery. We prayed for their health and Lord’s wisdom to repent and went ahead.

As we were walking in the street we saw so many girls from age 12 to 60 waiting for the customers. People could see their cheap make-up and some had children in their side. Anybody can imagine what happens to those small children when they see from their own eyes their mother sleeping with different men every hour.

We passed that street and went to another street. Same situation was there. Some girls were pulling some men’s hand to come as their costumer because if they do not find anybody, they and their children do not have anything to eat in evening as well as beating and cursing from Gharwali. We encountered with a lady who had about half kilogram of gold as her ornaments. She gave a bench for us to sit. We started to talk. She is one of the richest Gharwali of Mumbai as she has big numbers of girls. Her daily income from girls is about US$ 1000. She said she had started an organization for the rights of sex slaves. I cried in my heart but could not say anything about it as we were told- saying anything against them is to be killed. These Nepali Gharwalis are the main traders of girls. They are protected by local authorities and gangs with the power of money. We also prayed there and proceeded.

In the night I was crying with tears with our missionary James and his wife Selvi. They shared more heart-breaking stories and facts.

During 2010 ten baptized ladies from churches of west Nepal have been sold by husband, brother, pastor (I cannot say those people are pastor, but the Lord will judge them). Some became Christian and persecuted in family and they follow somebody for the better life who lead and sold them in Mumbai.

In 2004 Selvi was asked to go to a home for the prayers as a girl had high fever. She started to pray but customer came and Selvi was praying. Girl caught Selvi’s feet and requested for the prayer for healing, but customer was above that girl to feed his desire. That girl could not do as customer pleased. So that customer punched girl’s head and she died. Selvi ran to save her life.

Recently two girls were killed because they refused. Law does not work. Murder of children and old lady is normal. So many girls were rapped tying their hands and legs in pillars, some were beaten till death, and some got sign from hot iron in their thigh or lower belly before starting dhanda because new comers do not want in the beginning.

About 300000 ladies are still in Mumbai and many have settled to Pune and other towns of India because of Indian Government law.  Price of Nepali girls has gone high because importing girls are gone down. It is because of awareness in so many places. And Bombay Teen Challenge did prayer walks and fasting prayers in these areas.

Other main reason is that Nepal Police is proposing Nepal government to start Red Light Area in Kathmandu. Nepal Police report says more than 30000 girls are in sex slavery only in Kathmandu and more than 90% of them are from age 12 to 17 group. In other cities of Nepal, this God-hating business is growing.

“Lord, hear our prayers and send freedom for them.”
